Thought for the Day - 22nd May 2014 (Thursday)

Desires are a source of pleasure for man, but they are also the cause of grief. The mind has to be brought under control. Even thousands of men cannot hold back a fast-moving train. But the train comes to a stop the moment brake is applied. The same applies to the vagaries of the mind. When the mind is controlled, all sorrows cease. The Divine Atma, which dwells in the heart of every human being, is not recognized because it is covered by the clouds of desire. The splendour of the sun is revealed when a wind drives away the clouds that hide the sun. Likewise, when the wind of love blows away the clouds of desire in the heart, the ego (‘I’ ness) and possessiveness (sense of ‘mine’) are driven out and the effulgence of the Atma within is revealed in all its glory.

Keinginan adalah sumber kesenangan bagi manusia, tetapi keinginan juga merupakan penyebab penderitaan. Pikiran harus dikendalikan. Bahkan ribuan orang tidak bisa menahan kereta yang bergerak cepat. Tetapi kereta berhenti saat rem diinjak. Hal yang sama berlaku untuk liku-liku pikiran. Ketika pikiran dikontrol, semua penderitaan berhenti. Atma, yang bersemayam di dalam hati setiap manusia, tidak disadari karena tertutup oleh awan keinginan. Kemegahan matahari terungkap ketika angin mengusir awan yang menyembunyikan matahari. Demikian juga, ketika angin cinta-kasih meniup jauh awan keinginan dalam hati, yaitu ego ('I' ness) dan posesif (rasa 'milikku') didorong keluar maka cahaya dari Atma yang ada di dalam diri terungkap dengan segala kemuliaannya.
