Thought for the Day - 19th December 2020 (Saturday)

Idols are inert in nature and do not possess the qualities of compassion, love, etc. It is for this reason that some people are against idol-worship. This is ignorance. Are you not worshipping the pictures of your parents and grandparents? Do these pictures have life in them? No. Nor do they have the qualities of compassion, love, sacrifice, etc. Then what is the point in worshipping them? It is through these pictures that we are reminded of their virtues and ideals they stood for. Take for instance a hundred rupee note. There is neither life nor virtues of love or compassion in it. Yet people love it and would like to possess it. Money is valuable because it bears the government’s seal. Similarly, we respect the national flag for the value it stands for, though it is merely a piece of cloth, which is inert. If idol worship is considered foolish, then the same should apply to love for money and respect for flag, which are also lifeless. Man’s beliefs are based on his likes and dislikes. 

Arca adalah bersifat statis secara alami dan tidak memiliki sifat seperti welas asih, kasih, dsb. Karena alasan inilah dimana beberapa orang menentang pemujaan arca. Ini adalah kedunguan. Apakah engkau tidak memuliakan gambar dari orang tuamu dan kakekmu? Apakah gambar-gambar tersebut memiliki kehidupan? Tidak. Gambar-gambar tersebut juga tidak memiliki sifat-sifat welas asih, kasih, pengorbanan, dsb. Lantas apa gunanya memuja gambar-gambar tersebut? Adalah melalui gambar-gambar ini bahwa kita diingatkan terhadap sifat-sifat baik dan ideal yang mereka perjuangkan. Ambillah sebuah contoh uang kertas seratus ribuan. Di uang kertas itu tidak ada kehidupan dan juga tidak ada sifat kebaikan dari kasih atau welas asih di dalamnya. Namun orang-orang mencintainya dan sangat berhasrat memiliki uang tersebut. Uang menjadi bernilai karena ada stempel pemerintah di atasnya. Sama halnya, kita menghormati bendera kebangsaan karena ada nilai yang diperjuangkan di sana, meskipun bendera itu hanyalah sehelai kain yang bersifat statis. Jika pemujaan arca dianggap sebagai hal yang bodoh, kemudian hal yang sama juga berlaku untuk semua yang mencintai uang dan menghormati bendera, yang mana juga tidak memiliki kehidupan.
