It was to remind people in the villages to think of God that the ancients built temples which towered above all other buildings. The temple tower was the first thing the villagers saw when they woke up in the morning. The sight of the temple spire immediately aroused in them spontaneous feelings of adoration. It must be recognised that it was not a crazy feeling which inspired the ancients to build huge temples at great expense. These multi-storeyed temple towers were built so that they might constantly evoke sacred thoughts about God in the minds of the people. It has been said: "The body (deha) is like a temple for the Dehi (indwelling eternal Spirit)." Just as a doctor reminds you of illness, and a lawyer makes you think of litigation, in the same manner when you look at your body you must remember God.
Ini mengingatkan kita kembali pada orang-orang di desa zaman dahulu, temple/kuil dibangun tinggi menjulang di atas semua bangunan lainnya. Menara kuil adalah hal yang pertama kali mereka lihat ketika mereka bangun di pagi hari. Pemandangan puncak menara kuil segera membangkitkan perasaan spontan untuk melakukan pemujaan. Ini harus disadari bahwa bukan merupakan perasaan gila yang menginspirasi pada zaman dahulu untuk membangun kuil besar dengan biaya yang besar. Menara kuil bertingkat ini dibangun sehingga mereka bisa terus-menerus membangkitkan pikiran suci tentang Tuhan dalam pikiran mereka. Telah dikatakan: "Badan jasmani (deha) dapat diibaratkan seperti sebuah kuil untuk Dehi (Tuhan)." Sama seperti dokter mengingatkan engkau saat sakit, dan pengacara membuat tuntutan, demikian juga ketika engkau melihat badan jasmani-mu, engkau harus ingat pada Tuhan. Fire emerges when one wooden stick is rubbed against another. Can two sticks placed next to each other produce the fire? No. Fire though latent in them, emerges only through the act of rubbing of the sticks. What do these sticks symbolize? The sticks represent the human body. The fire of wisdom (jnana) is present in subtle form within us since our birth and is inert. Spiritual effort (Sadhana) is the process of rubbing the sticks. Where is the butter present in the milk? Butter has always been present in the milk and could be obtained only after the milk had been converted to curd and the curd was churned. Once butter is obtained from the buttermilk, it remains as butter without becoming milk. Likewise, in the human body, a divine power pervades every part of the body, which, after the experience of a Sakshatkar (vision of the Divine) will not be attached to the body.
Api timbul ketika batang kayu digosok dengan batang kayu yang lainnya. Dapatkah dua batang kayu yang ditempatkan berdampingan satu sama lain menghasilkan api? Tidak, meskipun api tersembunyi di dalam batang kayu, api akan timbul hanya melalui tindakan menggosok batang kayu tersebut. Melambangkan apakah batang kayu tersebut? Batang kayu menggambarkan badan manusia. Api kebijaksanaan (jnana) ada dalam wujud halus dalam diri kita sejak lahir dan inert. Upaya spiritual (Sadhana) adalah proses menggosok batang kayu. Dimanakah mentega ada dalam susu? Mentega selalu ada dalam susu dan dapat diperoleh hanya setelah susu telah diubah menjadi dadih dan dadih itu diaduk. Setelah mentega diperoleh dari buttermilk (cairan susu yang tinggal setelah membuat mentega), tetap sebagai mentega tanpa menjadi susu. Demikian juga, dalam badan manusia, kekuatan ilahi meliputi setiap bagian dari badan jasmani, yang mana setelah mengalami Sakshatkar (visi Ilahi) tidak akan melekat pada badan jasmani. The Gita advises that service to the society (Sangha) is the highest service (Seva), as well as the most beneficial spiritual discipline (Sadhana). No one can run away from this obligation; you have to use the community wherein you are born for sublimating your ego and saving yourself. Service taken up as a Sadhana teaches fortitude (Sahana). That is why Krishna directed Arjuna to engage in battle to win back his share of the Kingdom, and ensure for the people righteous administration and an atmosphere wherein they can strive successfully to attain salvation. This he had to do in a spirit of dedication and surrender to the will of God, irrespective of his own likes and dislikes, and the consequences that might flow from his unselfish activities. Even Avatars (incarnations) demonstrate in their lives the supreme importance of Seva.
Gita menyarankan agar pelayanan kepada masyarakat (Sangha) adalah pelayanan tertinggi (Seva), serta disiplin spiritual yang bermanfaat (Sadhana). Tidak ada yang bisa lari dari kewajiban ini; engkau harus menggunakan masyarakat dimana engkau dilahirkan untuk menghaluskan egomu dan menyelamatkan dirimu. Pelayanan dilakukan sebagai Sadhana mengajarkan ketabahan (Sahana). Itulah sebabnya Krishna mengarahkan Arjuna untuk terlibat dalam pertempuran untuk memenangkan kembali Kerajaan-nya, dan memastikan agar orang-orang melakukan tindakan yang benar dan mereka dapat berjuang untuk mencapai keselamatan. Ini yang harus dilakukannya dengan semangat pengabdian dan berpasrah pada kehendak Tuhan, terlepas dari rasa suka dan tidak suka, dan konsekuensi yang mungkin mengalir dari kegiatan yang tidak mementingkan dirinya. Bahkan Avatar (inkarnasi Tuhan) menunjukkan dalam hidup mereka pentingnya melakukan Seva. (Divine Discourse, Jan 11, 1968)

Oblivious to the presence of the Divine within, people embark on the quest for God. They behave like a person who goes to borrow milk from their neighbour, forgetting the wish-fulfilling cow (Kamadhenu) in their backyard. Avatars are of two kinds: Amsavatar and Purnavatar. Every human being is an Amsavatar (partial incarnation of the Divine); in the Gita, Lord Krishna says, ‘a part of the Divine Soul has become the individual soul in the world of living beings (Mamaivaamso jeevaloke jeevabhutah-sanaatanah)’. Many partial incarnations get caught up in Maya (worldly illusion), develop egoism and possessiveness, and lead worldly lives. Purnaavatar (full incarnation of the Divine) may behave, according to the circumstances, as if they were subject to Maya, but they are free from Maya at all times. They subdue and transcend Maya, and manifest their full Divinity to the world throughout their lives.
Tidak menyadari adanya Tuhan yang bersemayam di dalam diri, orang-orang memulai pencarian Tuhan. Mereka berperilaku seperti orang yang pergi untuk meminjam susu dari tetangga mereka, melupakan keinginan-pemenuhan sapi (Kamadhenu) di halaman belakang mereka. Avatar ada dua macam: Amsavatar dan Purnavatar. There are several, who, despite chanting the Lord’s name for several hours, days and months together, did not transform themselves even one bit. The demonic nature of Ravana, Bhasmasura and Kamsa did not diminish even a little, despite their chanting of the Lord’s name. What is the reason for this? All their sense organs function with the feeling: "I am the body (Aham Dehosmi)." Those who utter the name of the Lord while being immersed in body consciousness cannot realise the Divine, however long their penance may last. You are the embodiment of Divine Consciousness. Only when you are pure, you can experience that consciousness. Through attachment to worldly pleasures one gets bound to the physical and becomes oblivious to one’s essential Divinity.
Ada beberapa orang yang meskipun menchantingkan Nama Tuhan selama beberapa jam, beberapa hari, dan beberapa bulan bersama-sama, tidak mentransformasi diri mereka bahkan sedikitpun. Sifat setan Rahwana, Bhasmasura, dan Kamsa tidak berkurang bahkan sedikitpun, meskipun mereka menchantingkan Nama Tuhan. Apa alasan untuk hal ini? Semua organ-organ indera mereka berfungsi dengan perasaan: "Akulah badan (Aham Dehosmi)" Mereka yang menyebut Nama Tuhan saat sedang tenggelam dalam kesadaran badan tidak dapat menyadari Tuhan, betapapun lamanya mereka melakukan penebusan dosa. Engkau adalah perwujudan Kesadaran Ilahi. Hanya ketika engkau murni, engkau dapat mengalami kesadaran itu. The first prerequisite for leading a spiritual life is Faith. Your faith must stand ridicule of the ignorant, caviling by the worldly, and laughter of the low-minded. When someone ridicules, ask yourself, ‘Are they ridiculing my body? Well, that’s fine, for, I need to escape this body attachment anyway. Are they ridiculing the Atma? That is impossible, for the Atma is beyond words or thoughts, unaffected by praise or blame.’ Second: Do not worry about ups and downs, loss or gain, or joy or grief. You yourself create the ups and downs, therefore you can straighten them as well. You crave for a thing and when you get it, you call it joy; when you don't, you call it grief. Cut off craving, and there will be no more swinging from joy to grief. Third: Rationalise and be convinced of the truth that All is Divine (Sarvam Brahmamayam). Fourth and final: Be always steady in spiritual practice until you reach the goal.
Prasyarat pertama untuk menjalani hidup spiritual adalah Keyakinan. Keyakinanmu harus tetap kokoh karena ejekan, objek-objek duniawi, dan tertawaan dari mereka yang berpikiran rendah. Ketika seseorang menertawakanmu, tanyakan pada dirimu sendiri, 'Apakah mereka menertawakan badan saya? Tidak masalah, karena saya harus melepaskan diri dari kemelekatan badan jasmani ini. Apakah mereka menertawakan Atma? Itu tidak mungkin, karena Atma melampaui kata-kata atau pikiran, tidak terpengaruh oleh pujian atau hinaan.' Kedua: Janganlah khawatir tentang pasang-surut, kerugian atau keuntungan, atau sukacita atau kesedihan. Engkau sendiri menciptakan pasang surut, karena itu engkau juga dapat memperbaikinya. Engkau menginginkan sesuatu dan ketika engkau mendapatkannya, engkau menyebutnya sebagai sukacita; ketika engkau tidak mendapatkannya, engkau menyebutnya sebagai kesedihan. Potonglah keinginan, maka tidak akan ada lagi ayunan sukacita dan kesedihan. Ketiga:Rasionalisasikan dan yakinlah akan kebenaran bahwa semua adalah Ilahi (Sarvam Brahmamayam). Keempat dan terakhir: Mantaplah selalu dalam praktik spiritual sampai engkau mencapai tujuan. (Divine Discourse, May 16, 1964)

We either think of the past or the future and ruin the present. Past is past, forget it. The past which is dead and gone, is useless. Work for your progress by living in the present, and in the moment. Future does not always bring happiness. And so far as the past is concerned, how much happiness have you experienced in it? Therefore, live happily in the present. What should we do in the present? Follow this maxim: Less luggage more comfort makes travel a pleasure. We should not worry about the past at all. Thinking about the past will not do any good to us. Therefore we should lead our life in the present and achieve all-round progress.
Janganlah kita memikirkan masa lalu atau masa depan dan merusak masa sekarang. Masa lalu adalah masa lalu, lupakan saja. Masa lalu sudah mati dan berlalu, tidak ada gunanya. Bekerjalah untuk kemajuanmu dengan hidup di masa sekarang, dan pada saat ini. Masa depan tidak selalu membawa kebahagiaan. Dan sejauh masa lalu yang menjadi perhatian, berapa banyak kebahagiaan yang telah engkau alami di dalamnya? Oleh karena itu, jalanilah hidup bahagia di masa sekarang. Apa yang harus kita lakukan pada saat ini? Ikuti pepatah ini: Kurangilah bagasi/beban agar perjalanan lebih menyenangkan. Kita sama sekali tidak perlu khawatir tentang masa lalu. Berpikir tentang masa lalu tidak akan ada gunanya bagi kita. Oleh karena itu kita harus menjalani hidup kita di masa sekarang, maka kita akan mencapai kemajuan. When a tree sways with the wind, its branches bend and toss up and down. But the tiny bird sitting on it is not afraid? Why? Because the bird relies on its wings. Even if the branch falls down, as long as its wings are fine, it is safe. With this realization, the bird sits bravely on the swaying branch. However, human beings do not have so much faith as a tiny bird. Even with the slightest problems on the tree of life, people get very worried, why? It is because they have lost their self-confidence. Even at the slightest suffering, people are frustrated, depressed and unable to bear. Instead of depending on your intelligence, physical strength or wealth, trust your self-confidence. Do good deeds; let every step and all your efforts be directed to win His Grace and proximity. Then, you will surely triumph!

Each and every one of you is a spark of the Divine. Lord Krishna declares in Bhagavad Gita, “You are all essentially Divine, you are eternal and ancient. Do not conduct yourself as a human being nor be beastial in your attitude and behavior”. Each one of you is endowed with the sacred qualities of Truth, Righteousness, Love, Peace and Non-Violence. Hence, all of you must conduct yourself in accordance with these noble virtues. Never submit yourself to the evil qualities such as lust, greed, anger, jealousy, hatred and avarice. These do not befit the life of any human being. At times, changes in place or food habits give rise to other behavioural tendencies. Hence, be aware and take pure food and pure water regularly and in a timely manner. Lead a happy life, as a true human being, by observing all the rules and regulations.
Masing-masing dari kalian adalah percikan Ilahi. Sri Krishna menyatakan dalam Bhagavad Gita, "Pada dasarnya kalian semua adalah (perwujudan) Tuhan dan engkau adalah abadi. Janganlah bersikap dan berperilaku sebagai manusia dan juga jangan berperilaku sebagai binatang". Kalian semua diberkati dengan sifat-sifat suci yaitu Kebenaran, Kebajikan, Cinta-kasih, Kedamaian, dan Tanpa-Kekerasan. Oleh karena itu, kalian semua harus berperilaku sesuai dengan sifat-sifat mulia tersebut. Janganlah engkau tunduk/menyerah pada kualitas-kualitas yang buruk seperti nafsu, keserakahan, kemarahan, kecemburuan, kebencian, dan ketamakan. Hal ini tidak pantas dijalani oleh manusia. Kadang-kadang, perubahan tempat atau perubahan kebiasaan makanan menimbulkan kecenderungan perilaku yang berbeda. Oleh karena itu, engkau hendaknya memperhatikan dan mengambil makanan murni dan air murni secara teratur, pada waktu yang tepat. Suppose you dream that you are being bitten by a snake, and are struggling with pain, shouting and frantically searching for medicines. Now even though you are bitten by a snake, do you take medicine to remove the poison? No, you don’t do that, because this happened in your dream. You perhaps will even forget the pain, as soon as you wake up, isn’t it? Similarly today you are in deep slumber of ignorance and worldly attachments and hence undergo a lot of suffering. The world is ephemeral and full of misery. You suffer only because of ignorance and body attachment. The moment you are awakened from the slumber, your problems will be solved. Anyone and everyone who aspires to lead a happy life must reduce body attachment. You develop ego because of your position, associations, physical strength or wealth. If you want to enjoy bliss, never give any scope for ego.
Misalkan engkau bermimpi bahwa engkau sedang digigit ular, dan berjuang dengan rasa sakit, berteriak dan panik mencari obat-obatan. Sekarang meskipun engkau digigit ular, apakah engkau minum obat untuk menghilangkan racun? Tidak, engkau tidak melakukan hal itu, karena ini terjadi dalam mimpimu. Engkau bahkan mungkin akan melupakan rasa sakit, segera setelah engkau bangun, bukan? Demikian pula saat engkau berada dalam tidur nyenyak ketidaktahuan dan kemelekatan duniawi dan karenanya mengalami banyak penderitaan. Dunia ini fana dan penuh penderitaan. Engkau menderita hanya karena ketidaktahuan dan kemelekatan badan jasmani. Saat engkau terbangun dari tidur itu, masalahmu akan terpecahkan. Siapapun dan semua orang yang bercita-cita untuk hidup bahagia harus mengurangi kemelekatan pada badan jasmani. Engkau mengembangkan ego karena posisimu, asosiasi, kekuatan fisik atau kekayaan. Thought for the Day - 12th April 2014 (Saturday)
Young students are innocent. Their hearts and minds are pure, and they are selfless. In the primary school, you will find that many of them observe perfect discipline and are well behaved. By the time they are in secondary school, the purity and discipline slowly decreases. When they reach a college or university, everything becomes topsy-turvy! What really happens in between? As they grow in years, their mental balance is upset; they lose the steadiness of mind and self-control. They are exposed to undesirable influences. At this stage, teachers and parents must practice exemplary behavior and ensure that the children are on the right path at all times. Students also must bear in mind that all the regulations and discipline that are prescribed are for their highest good and in their own interests.
Anak-anak tidak berdosa. Hati dan pikiran mereka murni dan tanpa pamrih. Di sekolah dasar, engkau akan menemukan bahwa banyak dari mereka melaksanakan disiplin dengan baik dan berperilaku baik. Pada saat mereka berada di sekolah menengah, kemurnian dan disiplin perlahan-lahan menurun. Ketika mereka mencapai perguruan tinggi atau universitas, semuanya menjadi kacau-balau! Apa yang sebenarnya terjadi pada mereka? Saat mereka tumbuh dari tahun ke tahun, keseimbangan mental mereka rusak; mereka kehilangan kemantapan pikiran dan pengendalian diri. Mereka terkena pengaruh yang tidak menyenangkan. Pada tahap ini, guru dan orang tua harus mempraktikkan perilaku yang dapat di contoh dan memastikan bahwa setiap saat anak-anak berada di jalan yang benar. The Vedas taught two kinds of dharma (codes of right conduct). One is termed pravrithi (outward path) and the other is termed nivrithi (inward path). Pravrithi is related to worldly activities; it prescribes the qualities needed for leading the life in the mundane world. Nivrithi teaches knowledge of the Self (Atma-jnana). One who knows the difference between the two is dauntless. For example, when one is hungry, Pravrithi tells one to eat food and appease the hunger. Nivrithi reminds what kind of food one should eat, what is good for one’s health and what is injurious, and how it should be consumed. All conflicts begin from your mind; it is Pravrithi that generates conflict, brings about union and separation. Ayodhya (a-yodhya) means a place free from strife and controversy; no enemy could enter it. The human heart is the symbol of Ayodhya.

Every action carries with it an equal reaction. Every action is a seed, and these seeds grow into trees, so always undertake only sacred actions. Sometimes, we undertake actions with full enthusiasm and joy. When we end up suffering from the action’s consequences, we shed tears and lament. Hence, before you start doing anything, you must first think; discriminate between good and bad action, and conduct yourselves accordingly. You must also give importance to the appropriateness of the speech that flows through the action. Never do anything that will cause others trouble. It may appear impossible to go on with your duties without the feeling of body consciousness and attachment. But by constantly thinking of God, you must reduce these feelings. Then there will be no misery; pain and pleasure will not bother you.
Setiap tindakan disertai dengan reaksi yang sama. Setiap tindakan adalah bibit, dan bibit ini tumbuh menjadi pohon, jadi selalulah melakukan tindakan-tindakan yang suci. Kadang-kadang, kita melakukan tindakan dengan penuh antusiasme dan kegembiraan. Ketika kita akhirnya menerima konsekuensi dari tindakan tersebut, kita meneteskan air mata dan menyesalinya. Oleh karena itu, sebelum engkau mulai melakukan apa-apa, engkau harus terlebih dahulu berpikir; membedakan yang mana tindakan yang baik dan yang mana tindakan yang buruk, baru kemudian melakukan tindakan yang sesuai (tindakan yang baik). Engkau juga harus memberikan pentingnya kesesuaian kata-kata/ucapan yang mengalir melalui tindakan. Jangan pernah melakukan sesuatu yang akan menyebabkan orang lain menderita. Ini mungkin tampak mustahil untuk melakukan tugasmu tanpa merasakan kesadaran badan jasmani dan kemelekatan. Tetapi dengan terus-menerus memikirkan Tuhan, engkau harus mengurangi perasaan ini.
